Beacon - Antepavilion 2019
Studio Rumi created a pavilion which was elegant and beautiful without becoming a
protagonist of its surroundings during the day and in contrast it was dominant at night.
The arch, which draws context from the existing arches adjacent from the site, is organized in a circular spiral array in plan so that the sculpture would interact with
all of its surroundings. Every arch decreases in size as it is arrayed along the spiral. This creates a complex 3D form from a very simple architectural element.
The sculpture serves to celebrate the discordant character of the adjacent rooftops by reflecting them during the day. The outer arches are clad in mirror film. As passer-by walks past, they would see the sculpture and its slightly distorted reflections.
As the light of the day disappears the inner arches signal a strong visual presence at night - a beacon of light. Arrayed in the same manner as the outer mirror layer, they form a light inner core – the heart of the beacon.
