Interactive VR Experience
Located in the heart of Munich, Deutsche Bahn opened an info center as a long term exhibit. It is to provide information to the public about the major construction project of expanding Munich's subway train system with a second core line, as well as three underground stations: Munich main station, Ostbahnhof and Marienhof.
A VR visualisation of the new Marienhof station acts as a center piece of the exhibition.
Original construction plans were used to build a realtime 3d model, running on the Unreal Engine. htc Vive offers room-scale VR, while the leapmotion input system is used for easy interaction by just using ones hands. Original sounds were implemented in spatialized audio to provide an even more immersive experience.
The tour starts with a bird's-eye view of inner city Munich. The underground station can be called to the surface, offering a view of the architecture as a whole, which can be inspected from all sides by using hand gestures.
Another gesture calls up a menu, by which one can teleport right into the architecture. After a short train ride into the station, the user can explore different levels of the new architecture, or take an elevator ride all the way to the surface. Thanks to VR, one truly gets an impression of the scope of the architecture and, with the station being built right next to the exhibition, it serves as a strong inclusion to the construction project.
The VR installation was set up in a modular way, in order to easily expand it with the other stations, as well as offering additional information during the full course of construction.
