Notes
West 8 is an international award winning office for urban design and landscape architecture. We follow a multi-disciplinary approach to the creation of landscape. Beyond demolish and install, or preserve and protect models, West 8 adds and expresses new natures and creates new ecological frameworks.
Houston Botanic Garden is a non-profit organization leading the way to establish and grow a world-class botanic garden in Houston. Formed in 2002, Houston Botanic Garden is working steadfastly to create Houston’s first Botanic Garden, rich in educational opportunities, which also serves as a place for reflection and observation. Once opened, the garden will provide a place to learn about plants, conservation, and nature, connecting Houstonians across different cultures and ethnicities, and providing the missing piece to this city’s greenspaces, educational and cultural institutions.
Most visualizations are done by West 8 in-house, right from the start of the design process. A range of software contributes to the visualization process and it all comes together in Lumion 3D. The advancement of CG over recent years has brought with it a wide range of natural elements, although it is still too limited for a botanic garden design. This prompted us to create our own 2D assets for animation. Starting with small experiments in 2016, the process was ready to be applied to the Houston Botanic Garden project in 2017. Our architects discovered their talent for drawing plants by putting away their mouse and exploring traditional techniques every now and then. This version of the movie was published for fund-raising, yet it is evolving with the design process of the garden. Whenever new species are added to the collection, new 2D assets are created and added to the movie.
