The site is located in West India Quays, historically one of London’s wealthiest docks. The history of this site reveals a great deal on how most of its wealth was gained through the Caribbean Sugar Trade. A visit to the site hides a key part of the docks history in a small permanent exhibit, not much else is indicative of the great influence and contribution played by Caribbean labour in influencing the growth and changing face of the site. The film explores the possibility of incorporating elements of Caribbean history as part of a virtual ‘exhibit’ geo-located at the relevant site locations. A visitor to the virtual exhibit has the option at various points on the exhibition walk, through interactive media (explored through a written thesis), to explore site specific elements of the past.
The Film gives you a point of view through these exhibit spaces, with external views of the virtual space you’re experiencing. The whole exhibit forms elements of a journey and the last scene of the film conveys a celebration, mirroring the joys of emancipation; the space is re-imagined in an array of colours mirroring the people’s history. The final shot reveals where these virtual exhibits can be ‘discovered’ around the site.
