The BIG Difference with Lighting | BIG Architects
by Nicole Calzacorta, Marketing; Glessner Group
There is a BIG difference in the outcome of a render when considering the numerous variables within CG lighting. Subtle or drastic changes to lighting can influence the overall style of the final render - and either articulate design features or potentially diminish others.
Inside the Glessner Group CG studio, our designers often experiment with contrasting render styles to see what parts of the design can be enhanced - by trying out different lighting techniques and by using the same or multiple camera views in test renders. This experimentation is a working-tutorial for our designers and serves as a continuous investigation for them to see how a final render can change dramatically as a result of subtle or drastic lighting adjustments.
SHOWCASED MESSAGE
Some important questions to always keep in mind are; #1 what design elements are you (or the client) wanting to celebrate in the render, #2 who is your audience (or who is the client's target market), #3 what is the showcased message of your render as a form of art and lastly, #4 how does your render emphasize the concept of the project you are illustrating?
The TOP render was useful to represent how the Shenzhen Energy Mansion blends into the evening lights of Shenzhen, China's cityscape. This render style illustrates the graceful expression of the architectural design with its subtle lighting approach. This style is great for understanding of how the design integrates into its environment, yet it is not as strong with expressing the concept itself.
So, contrasting to the peaceful nature of the top image - the BOTTOM image darkens the ambiance and really emphasizes the dramatic cuts in both of the facades. These adjustments to the lighting environment noticeably change the overall mood of the render - simply by enhancing the light that floods out from both buildings. In addition, this lighting effect in the architecture is balanced by the streaming traffic lights below to provide a visual base in this pitch-black night render; cohesively the dissecting elements of light connect into the dark.
SUMMARY
There are moments when it is necessary to create realistic lighting environments, and there are moments when it is necessary to bring the drama and make the lighting a little more cinematic. CG artistry is all about the visual feel and emotional impact; and our designers at Glessner Group understand that proper lighting truly makes all the difference in our renders.
So, what is your render preference - subtle, dramatic, cinematic? We like to hear your comments about our renders, thoughts on CG lighting - and as always - inspire one another to improve our craft.
