For[u]m is an annual event where Kronospan show off their new decors [Wood panels] to an array of industry folks to ascertain which they think will be popular next season. The 30 or so decors are grouped into 4 "Trends" which reflect the type of textures and colours of each.
Usually they would just have each decor on a plinth and people vote for their preference using pen and paper. This year they were brave enough to let us develop an iPad application which utilises augmented reality CG models of previous Kronospan projects we have created to allow each visitor to customise a kitchen with various decors then vote on which combination they prefer.
On arriving at the event, each visitor was provided with an iPad. When they loaded up the pre-installed app, they were shown a map with 4 trend locations on it. When they visited the area on the map, they selected the relevant trend and pointed the ipad at the marker on the wall, this triggered the appearance of a 3D kitchen model. They then proceed to customise the model with the various colour and texture combinations until they are happy with the combination, then they "Vote" and it saves their selection. They then proceed to the other locations, voting each time until the course is complete.
The information was then collated into an info-graphic allowing Kronospan to see the most popular decors for each trend and also the most popular combinations of textures and colours.
Using this technology allowed them to get information they wouldn't usually have been able to ascertain, such as popular combinations, chosen in the context of a kitchen scene. It overcomes the issue of people making choices without having to "visualise" in their minds or go through the hassle of trying it out in reality.
