This short-film was created to showcase an architectural project that has won the Architectural League of New York 2023 Prize.
Our aim was to convey a sense of liveness and to highlight a distinctive feature of the house – a three-story circular void that facilitates visual, auditory, and atmospheric connections between each level of the dwelling. Through this space, traditional ideas of privacy within a home are challenged by a shared, central experience that influences the flow of light, air, and sound. The house accentuates its interior qualities while also revealing and making audible the elements of the external world just beyond its boundaries.
In this short film, we explore the transformation of a house into a home. We witness the occupants of the house in the process of moving in – unpacking boxes and hanging art. These deliberate actions of arranging and personalizing the space represent a deeply intimate conversation between the inhabitants and the architecture.
To depict this moment of moving in, we thought about the moment where things are already inside, but yet to be arranged.
It came to our mind that in Versailles, it's usual to cover the public statues to avoid acid rain damage. This approach adds an intriguing and artistic aura to these sculptures, concealing them beneath the shroud of mystery. We drew from this annual event to capture the essence of items already inside but yet to be organized and still covered to prevent dust and damage:

Additionally, we introduced the concept of a tall statue to accentuate the height of the void, while conveying this idea of moving in.
This idea was inspired by a scene from the movie "Prometheus," where a room features a towering statue that utilizes an opening in the ceiling for placement:

Recognizing the potential for captivating lighting conditions within the central void, we wanted to explore more of this possibility. We used Jean-François Zevaco - Casablanca House that takes a good advantage of the light in a similar opening shape:

These moments are capture through a combination of stillness with a slow paced movement of the light throughout the space, uncovering every corner.
As the initial steps of homemaking unfold, our attention is drawn to the transitional phase that exists between the notions of "house" and "home." The video freezes time around this somewhat awkward period of occupation, when individuals adapt and make the space their own until it feels just right.
