I've always been fascinated with trains. As a kid i liked to sit down near railways and watch as trains pass. I liked the sound and smell of them. The most exciting moment was waving to the driver and listening to the sound of the train horn.
Before i started creating "Mighty gagarin" image i gathered set of reference images. I wanted to capture environment as wild and natural as possible. Also – characteristic element of presented locomotive – ST 44 are dense, black exhaust fumes. I found some of references on youtube and some on google.
Mighty gagarin scene has been completely done in 3d. There are no matte paint elements, background replacement or other forms of mixing 2d and 3d ( except the roe and the exhaust fumes of course ).
