STORY BEHIND:
Recently, my family has been going through a tough time with a loved one struggling with depression. It has been challenging to create a warm and welcoming environment for our three children at home.
However, we have learned that asking for help is one of the bravest things a person can do.
Our home is where we find comfort, and it is important to create a space that fosters a sense of calm and healing.
As an artist, creating allows me to clear my mind and continue on a journey that is life, full of ups and downs, with perseverance and hope. Creating makes me feel like a superhero! With just a pen and paper, I can bring to life characters and stories that live in my mind, and than pass them to 3D! The power to create something out of nothing is a gift that I cherish every day. Whether I am drawing, writing, or modeling and rendering, the act of creating brings a sense of joy and fulfillment that cannot be matched. It is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is light to be found in the power of imagination and the beauty of creation.
I live in an island, and few years ago my brother immigrated in search of a better life. He is currently in his final year of studying Music Production and Sound Engineering. In an effort to bring us closer together and improve our relationship, I asked him to create an original soundtrack for an animation of this particular scene that I bring to the contest. The result was unexpected, as we discussed the best approach to the short film and how it could work. This ultimately became a catalyst for other projects we worked on together. The connection between my brother and me has been strengthened by the beauty of collaboration. Even though we are miles apart, music and 3D have brought us closer together. It is a reminder that distance does not have to be a barrier to creativity and love. The art we create together is a testament to the enduring bond between siblings, and a reminder that even in the most challenging of circumstances, we can find ways to connect and support each other.
AT THE SAME TIME, I ASKED MY DAUGHTER TO BE PART OF THIS PROJECT, I TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SPENDING QUALITY TIME WITH MY ELDER DAUGHTER AND THUS ENCOURAGING HER TO BE CREATIVE.
Through an emotional #3D #animation, the short film created addresses the issue of #depression and encourages reflection on its complex nature. We hope that this #story can awaken critical thinking about mental health and inspire more conscious and impactful architecture in our lives.

INSPIRATION:
Came from the film “Requiem for a Dream” directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly, Christopher McDonald, and Marlon Wayans. It is based on the 1978 novel of the same name by Hubert Selby Jr., with whom Aronofsky wrote the screenplay.
SYNOSIS:
The lack of humanism in contemporary architecture and cities is a result of the neglect of our political system towards sensory and behavioral concerns, prioritizing only aesthetics, functionality, and deadlines. This approach leads to the creation of empty and disconnected spaces that have a detrimental impact on mental health in today's society.
The human experience is intricately tied to our spatial experience, and it is crucial that spaces are designed to evoke positive neurological and sensory responses in our bodies and minds. The post-pandemic period has shed light on the alarming rise in anxiety and depression disorders, emphasizing the urgent need for architectural spaces that prioritize mental health and well-being.
Architecture holds the power to be emancipatory and healing. By incorporating principles from environmental and neurological psychology, environmental perception, and the geography of emotions, it can play a transformative role in influencing cognitive and emotional well-being. This entails promoting policies, programs, and strategies that prioritize the mental and emotional needs of individuals.
"E_mpty Spaces, Heavy Hearts" delves into the concept of home, challenging the prevailing notion that it is always a safe haven. It confronts the harsh reality that not all individuals have the privilege of a nurturing and supportive home environment. As a members of a society, we most advocates for architectural designs that provide solace and healing for those seeking refuge within the walls of their homes.
Sadly, not all children have a positive home environment. Some return home to find their loved ones unconscious in a corner, or worse, their homes may be empty altogether. The image underscores the importance of recognizing that every child has the right to humanism, respect, and the freedom to be a child, even when their living conditions are far from ideal. It highlights that "home" should be a place where we can live and interact in a positive and nurturing environment, but acknowledges that this is not always the case, particularly at the present moment.
The primary objective of "E_mpty Spaces, Heavy Hearts" is to stimulate critical thinking and foster the development of more conscientious and impactful architectural practices. This image aims to ignite a transformation in how we perceive and approach the spaces we consider home, promoting designs that prioritize well-being and contribute to positive change in society.
