PASSAGE OF TIME
HERMITAGE RESTORATION
ANCASTER, ON, CANADA
How do we save architecture from the passage of time?
Is it important to preserve a city’s built history?
How do we do this?
The ‘Hermitage’ is an old home and local piece of history with a haunting backstory. What remains of the ruins was beginning to crumble. Set in a dense forest just outside of town, it was a popular place to visit. Although it had become unsafe to explore, yet we could not let it go.
We developed a plan to save this piece of history. We disassembled and labelled each stone in order to construct a rigid steel skeleton. Each stone was carefully re-assembled and reconstructed from historical photographs. Today it is a destination for locals and a reminder of local history that future generations will enjoy.
