Notes

We designed a never-seen-before island home that rises up from Farm Cove between the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Opera House. We named it Ø House after the Danish word for ‘island’ in deference to the architectural heritage of its most renowned neighbour. Given its prized ‘location’, Ø House needed to be a masterpiece of ethereal balance. We achieved this by creating a radial house form that nestles into Farm Cove. Minimalist, Scandinavian design added to a sense of sublime luxury. The rooftop landscape was inspired by the Botanic Gardens adjacent; the glass-bottomed, infinity swimming pool suspended above the portico echoing the surrounding harbour.

Sources of Inspiration and References

When it came to the concept stage of the Øhouse design, we chose the surrounding area as a source of inspirations. Firstly the form of the building was inspired by the shape of the Sydney's Farm cove its self. The pedestal on which the development rests is surrounded by a beautiful arch, which is open to the sea on one side. You can see we took this form and implemented it into the design with one side open to the ocean like a horse shoe. https://www.gettyimages.com.au/photos/farm-cove-on-sydney-harbour We also studies The Calyx in the neighbouring Botanical Garden. A striking Geometric form designed by PTW Architects. The circular shape with its floating inner ring and island was referenced as we designed the underground parking layout of the Øhouse. https://architectureau.com/articles/the-calyx/ https://www.ptw.com.au/ The Sydney Opera House was an obvious source of inspiration for us. The name Øhouse itself means Island house with a nod to the Dane JØrn Utzon, architect of the Sydney Opera house. We wanted to design something with curves to complement the form of the Opera House without trying to upstage it in anyway.
