Originally, this piece was meant to be a technical study in lighting white materials. Then, the tragic killing of George Floyd and the subsequent marches, demonstrations, and frank conversations motivated me to give a little more meaning to the work. History is complex and so are humans.

I believe that understanding our (all humans') history is crucial to our ability to coexist and create an equitable society. Furthermore, I just find the world that much more vibrant and compelling as I learn more about history. So, I wanted to visually display how whitewashing and obscuring those stories robs everyone of so much richness that is just below the surface. And ultimately, we can only put a thin, cheap veneer over the truth.
