Notes
The proposed hotel project is situated in an area of Melbourne which is under vast gentrification. The building sits within a complicated street-scape, where the architecture varies from residential to car dealerships. We wanted to communicate this building as a monolithic, sculptural element, almost cathedral like. Our main challenge was getting the building to sit comfortably in frame and make it feel like it had been there for years.
One of our biggest challenges was the near perfect Australian weather with its harsh sunlight and petrol blue skies. To counter this we opted to wait to shoot until the once a year conditions of a damp, Winter, foggy morning occurred.
We felt the fog helped the building recede and blend into the over complicated street-scape. It's quite challenging making a powerful concrete building feel soft in a suburban context, the fog softens the sky and helps the facade melt into the background
To further enhance the feeling that the building had been around for years we opted to avoid digital and shoot on traditional film. Digital felt too clinical for this project and lacked the depth and tone we wanted in our blacks and greens.
