Notes
This image is part of set of 4 renderings commissioned by Metro. It illustrates the widening of the 405 freeway at the so called 'Sepulveda Pass' (across the Santa Monica Mountains, between West Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley). This is the most important ongoing engineering project in the city of LA and I am proud to be part of it. This particular image shows the system of on and off ramps (8 in total) at the I-405 and Wilshire Blvd crossing. The iconic Federal Building (General Services Adiministration - GSA) can be seen in the foreground, as well as the VA Hospital and the Veterans (WW II) Cemetery. A very thick set of civil plans, landscape architecture, structural engineering, topography and lighting and signage was used to build the model. The existing buildings were modeled using Google Earth as a reference. No 3D model was directly taken from Google Earth, however. All the geometry was modeled from scratch. The whole process, from initial modeling to the final TIF 16-bit printable image, took 2 months of intense work on 2 i7 8-core custom-configured Shuttle boxes with 8Mb of RAM each. The image can be seen on the Metro web site here:

I'd like to stress: This is not a hobby piece but actual production work, generated under real world circumstances and pressure. it should be seen and evaluated as such.
